On Sept. 25, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) announced that it reached a voluntary resolution with the Tupelo Public School District in a two-year long investigation into the district’s school disciplinary practices. This announcement reminds school districts that they need to be reviewing their civil rights data to see if there are any disparities in the data that need to be addressed by the district. A district that is proactive in reviewing this data and making changes to its practices based on the data is far less likely to have a visit from OCR.
