Student Who is Almost 21

Reviewed January 2022

Every year we get questions on students who are age 21 and whether the student can start the school year or finish the school year. Iowa Code 282.1 provides the definition of school age is ages 5 to 21. There is no specific date referenced in this section of code like there is in Iowa Code 282.3(2) which states that a child must reach a certain age by Sept. 15 to be old enough to start that grade. As such, if a student is not age 21 by the day school starts - in most districts that will be on or about Aug. 23 the student may enroll in and may complete the school year even if the student turns 21 the day after school starts. If the student turns age 21 before school starts they are no longer school age.
