Summer Professional Development

Below are 2023 dates for in-person and virtual training opportunities this summer. Additional details and registration links will be posted soon.

Make it Fresh with Cooking Counts: Culinary Skills with Local Foods
Back by popular demand! The bureau will offer six regional, in-person culinary training opportunities in June and July 2023.  We will introduce attendees to 12 standardized recipes that can be incorporated into your Child Nutrition menus. This hands-on training will help you better understand how to utilize fresh ingredients in your recipes from purchasing to final plating. Attendees will be eligible for a sub-grant opportunity to train nutrition staff on the preparation and promotion of the recipes.
Registration is limited to two employees per district and space is limited.

Class time is 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

New! A pre-conference opportunity to meet with the Bureau of Nutrition Consultants from the state agency and meet other new school nutrition directors in Iowa.

Get off to a good start in your new role in school nutrition leadership by joining the Bureau of Nutrition Consultants. You will have an opportunity to meet with Bureau Consultants and other new directors informally before the Conference. Receive a professional development checklist to ensure you have the knowledge and training for your path to success. No fee; please register so we know you are attending.

July Virtual Series -  Introduction to School Nutrition Leadership from the Institute of Child Nutrition (ICN)

July 10, 17, 24 and 31
Sessions are a full-day schedule 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. for a total of 32 hours.

A series of 4 interactive sessions offered virtually once weekly in July. Institute of Child Nutrition (ICN) presenters will facilitate an overview of the management components of school nutrition programs. Iowa Consultants will also be present. Registrants are expected to attend all four days and attend online courses described on the agenda:

July 20, 2023 Virtual Free and Reduced Price School Meals/Free Milk Application Approval and Direct Certification
9 a.m. to noon
Audience: Authorized representatives, food service directors, determining officials and confirming officials

Learn about the process for distributing, receiving, processing and notification of school meal eligibility. Update and review provided on the Iowa free and reduced price school meal/free milk applications, direct certifications, E-LookUp, approval process for applications, Hawki, and an introduction to the verification process.
