Cyberbullying: Tips for Educators

About the Presenter: Patti Agatston, Ph.D.

Dr. Agatston is co-author of the book Cyber Bullying: Bullying in the Digital Age with Robin Kowalski, Ph.D., and Susan Limber, Ph.D. and has co-authored a chapter for the book Expert Perspectives in Cyberbullying. She is also co-author of the Cyber Bullying Curriculum for Grades 6-12 and the Cyber Bullying Prevention Curriculum for Grades 3-5. Dr. Agatston is a certified trainer and technical assistance consultant for the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. She has been quoted in articles on cyber bullying in The Washington Post, CNET news, Time Magazine, and the Christian Science Monitor. She has appeared on CNN as well as other local and national radio and television programs to discuss cyber bullying and other youth online risky behavior. She was a participant in the CDC’s Expert Panel on Electronic Media and Youth Violence and the CDC’s Expert Panel on Youth Involvement in Bullying and Suicide-Related Behaviors. She has presented nationally and internationally on bullying, cyber bullying, and digital citizenship. Dr. Agatston is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Prevention Specialist with the Cobb County School District’s Prevention/Intervention Center in Marietta, Georgia. She serves on the Board of Directors for the International Bullying Prevention Association and Connect Safely.

Cyberbullying Research Center - This website serves as a clearinghouse of information concerning the ways adolescents use and misuse technology. It is intended to be a resource for parents, educators, law enforcement officers, counselors, and others who work with youth. Here you will find facts, figures, and detailed stories from those who have been directly impacted by online aggression. In addition, the site includes numerous resources to help you prevent and respond to cyberbullying incidents.

The Cyberbullying Research Center is directed by Dr. Sameer Hinduja (Florida Atlantic University) and Dr. Justin Patchin (University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire). They have been studying cyberbullying since 2002 and first launched this website in 2005. They founded the Center as a means to further their mission of bringing sound research about cyberbullying to those who can benefit most from it.

About the Presenter: Nate Monson

Nate Monson leads Iowa Safe Schools where he has been Executive Director since 2007. He is a well-known voice in Iowa on issues related to LGBTQ youth and school climate issues. He speaks annually to many colleges/universities, schools, corporations, and community organizations. Nate serves his community with involvement in various organizations, including being a member of the LGBT Health Initiative, Lifeworks DM board member, and a member of the Iowa Department of Education's Learning Supports Advisory Team. Previously, Nate was appointed to the Iowa Department of Human Rights Board by Governor Chet Culver and served as Secretary of the Clarke University Alumni Board.

Nate graduated from Clarke University in 2007 with a BA in History.

In his role at Iowa Safe Schools, Nate works to lead the organization's strategic plan, development efforts, organization of the Annual Iowa Governors Conference on LGBTQ Youth, and creation of programming efforts.

About the Presenter: Marlene Snyder, Ph.D.

Marlene Snyder is an associate professor at the Institute of Family and Neighborhood Life at Clemson University in South Carolina and serves as the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program's national point of contact.

Dr. Snyder is also a training director for the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program. She has served as a national and international conference speaker, trainer, and technical assistance consultant for educational, mental health, child welfare, and juvenile justice agencies, as well as parent education organizations. Dr. Snyder consults regularly with a wide variety of professional and community organizations on a range of topics related to bullying prevention and intervention. She has also written extensively on the topic of ADHD, including a book entitled ADHD & Driving: A Guide for Parents of Teens with ADHD. Dr. Snyder is the founding president of the International Bullying Prevention Association.

About the Presenter: Susan Limber, Ph.D.

Susan Limber is director of the Center on Youth Participation and Human Rights and professor of psychology at Clemson University. She is a developmental psychologist who received her masters and doctoral degrees in psychology at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. She also holds a Masters of Legal Studies from Nebraska.

Dr. Limber's research and writing have focused on legal and psychological issues related to youth violence (particularly bullying among children), child protection, and children's rights. She directed the first wide-scale implementation and evaluation of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program in the United States and co-authored the Blueprint for the Bullying Prevention Program as well as many other articles on the topic of bullying. In recent years, she has directed the training for the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program in the United States. She has provided consultation to the National Bullying Prevention Campaign, supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration.

In 1997, she received the Saleem Shah Award for early career excellence in psychology-law policy, awarded by the American Psychology-Law Society of the American Psychological Association (Division 41) and the American Academy of Forensic Psychiatry. In 2004, Dr. Limber received the American Psychological Association's Early Career Award for Psychology in the Public Interest.
