Vision Statement

The vision for social studies in Iowa is to equip civic-minded students who understand from where they’ve come and are prepared for their role as global citizens actively engaged for the common good and prepared for college, career and civic life.

Mission Statement

Social studies in Iowa empowers students with the knowledge, perspectives, and critical thinking skills needed to engage in inquiry and interdisciplinary pursuits in order to become global citizens actively engaged for the common good and prepared for college, career and civic life.

Purpose

The purpose of the Statewide Social Studies Leadership Team is to collaboratively create and implement a vision for social studies in the state of Iowa.  The team also works on creating guidance, resources, and professional development materials for teachers across the state.  The team is made up of thirty-five individuals representing AEAs, higher education, classroom teachers, professional organizations, and cultural institutions across the state.
