Basic Educational Data Survey (BEDS)

On this page...

The Basic Educational Data Survey (BEDS) collects staffing, student and policy data from public districts, nonpublic schools, and Area Education Agencies (AEAs).

Data from the BEDS collections are used to meet state and federal reporting requirements, respond to legislative requests for information, and support education research. Data collection occurs in the fall and spring.

Fall BEDS

Collects a variety of information from public districts, AEAs, and nonpublic schools. Nonpublic building forms are dependent upon accreditation type and if the schools submit data via Student Reporting in Iowa.

Fall BEDS Staff

Collects position, assignment, and compensation data from public districts, state-accredited nonpublic schools, and AEAs.

Spring BEDS

Collects a variety of information from public districts and nonpublic schools, including bullying data, English learner program/professional development data and kindergarten programs. Information about district calendars, start-end dates and school instructional minutes for the coming school year are also collected. Nonpublic building forms are dependent upon accreditation type and if the schools submit data via Student Reporting in Iowa.
