Two new English exams offer more flexibility for students who aspire to earn the state’s Biliteracy Seal.
The addition of the AAPPL and STAMP English tests will provide additional high-quality options for students to earn the seal. Unlike other tests that measure proficiency, such as the state assessment or ACT, the new tests can be administered any time. The Iowa Biliteracy Seal Guidance was updated to include the tests, which are located under English Assessment Options.
Some 60 districts have opted to use the Biliteracy Seal as a way of commending students who have mastered English and at least one other language.
The Biliteracy Seal is important because knowing and using more than one language is a critical 21st century skill in the job market and global economy. The seal not only recognizes a student’s accomplishment, but it also gives employers, universities, and grant or scholarship providers a method to recognize applicants for their dedication to attaining biliteracy.
