Register for active shooter tabletop workshop

Thursday, February 28, 2019

The Iowa Department of Education has created a workshop to provide schools with an understanding of how to design, facilitate, and evaluate a building-level exercise in order to comply with the IAC 280.30 requirement for active shooter drills. Participants will leave with all of the materials necessary to meet this legal requirement in their school.

The workshop will consist of three modules:

  1. Basic principles of exercise design, facilitation and evaluation. How to implement changes based on what you learn in an exercise.
  2. Facilitators will conduct an exercise and explore the conceptual issues that need to be addressed in an active shooter scenario. During the exercise, the facilitator will explain how the concepts addressed in the exercise can be modified to your specific school.
  3. Attendees will be provided with an overview of the Active Shooter Tabletop Exercise Toolkit. This toolkit has been designed to provide attendees with the scenarios, agendas, templates, and other tools needed to design, facilitate, and evaluate an effective tabletop exercise at the building level.

Time will be provided for attendees to ask questions.

Who should attend:

  • School administrators
  • Teachers and Staff
  • School Resource Officers
  • Law Enforcement
  • Emergency Managers
  • Fire/EMS

To improve access to these training opportunities, five workshops across the state have been scheduled for the following dates and locations:
March 6 - Storm Lake
March 19 - Cedar Falls
March 21 - Atlantic
April 9 - Ottumwa
April 11 - Adel

The workshops will run promptly from 8:30-Noon, so come early to check in. There is no cost to attend.
