It’s been 101 years since Veterans Day’s precursor, Armistice Day, came into being. It honored the end of World War I.
By 1938, Veterans Day became a national holiday, honoring all American veterans, living and dead.
With Veterans Day being next week on Nov. 11, educators have numerous resources at their fingertips. We offer a few:
- The Veterans National Education Program focuses on educating students on Modern History by providing historically accurate, relevant educational resources. Based in Pennsylvania, the program’s vision is to teach the history of our country “through the eyes of veterans.”
- The Library of Congress has a wonderful Veteran History Project where students collect narratives of veteran experiences to be archived to the Library.
- The Korean War Digital History Project offers lesson plans for classroom use and a youth corps experience for grandchildren of Korean War veterans.
- PBS NewsHour has a lesson plan on Veterans Day and the meaning of sacrifice.
- The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs also published a guide for Veterans Day activities.
