New resource: Online learning opportunities and tools

The Iowa Department of Education is launching a new resource that will provide online learning opportunities and tools to support educators as they navigate virtual learning environments and incorporate online instruction this fall.

Educators can access quality online course resources through Iowa e-Learning Central when and where it’s needed most, regardless of whether instruction occurs onsite or online.

“Our goal with Iowa e-Learning Central is to support districts and educators by providing free and reduced-cost course resources for delivering quality online education,” said Iowa Department of Education Director Ann Lebo.

Districts using the Canvas Learning Management System -- which is provided at no cost to schools or families for the 2020-21 school year -- can access and use high-quality instructional content for high school students. Content currently is only available through the use of Canvas. Current offerings are available at no cost, or at a significantly reduced cost.  As the school year progresses, grades kindergarten through eighth grade will be added. The content is available to all public and non-public schools, as well as those who homeschool.

Plans are underway for districts using other learning management platforms other than Canvas to also have the ability to access the classroom content.

Using the classroom content is entirely voluntary.

The course resources can be used by teachers to support their implementation of Iowa’s Academic Standards, as well as to meet 4-3-3-3 graduation requirements, which refers to four classes of English language arts and three classes each in science, mathematics and social studies. Additional course resources are available for World Languages, Financial Literacy, and Computer Science. Educators can use as much or as little content as they want.
