Director Wise announces 30 school visits
DES MOINES – Iowa Department of Education Director Ryan Wise kicks off his fifth year of weekly visits to Iowa schools and classrooms. Wise is scheduled to visit 30 school districts through December.
In the four years since Wise became director, he has visited more than 500 schools in over 200 districts.
“I’ve made it a priority to visit schools because I can see how education policy is put in place in Iowa’s classrooms,” he said. “These visits are an opportunity to get feedback from educators and to see the impact of education policy on student learning.”
The school visits also help Wise understand how key state efforts are playing out. These include Iowa’s teacher leadership system, which is the most extensive in the nation; an early literacy initiative to ensure students are proficient readers by the end of third grade; career and technical education to prepare students for success beyond high school; and the newest effort, the Iowa Clearinghouse for Work-Based Learning, which matches students with real-world business projects, giving students a deeper level of learning and affording them a chance to test drive careers.
The visits will begin this Friday, Aug. 30, when Wise will visit the districts of Dike-New Hartford and Grundy Center.
