AmeriCorps Host Site Opportunity

Educate and Elevate AmeriCorps Program

The Iowa Department of Education’s Educate and Elevate AmeriCorps program has been developed to help on-board and train tutors to assist adult learners who lack adult education and literacy (AEL) skills and/or have not completed their high school equivalency diploma. Accepted tutors (“members”) will receive all necessary volunteer training to be successful in this new role through such resources as Literacy New York’s (LNY) highly successful Intake to Outcomes (I2O) online training platform. Specific job duties and roles for members will vary dependent on host sites needs and capacity but will primarily focus on tutoring adult learners in the areas of basic mathematics, basic reading, and English for speakers of other languages.

The Iowa Literacy Council (ILC) is a key partner in ensuring every Iowan has the literacy skills to reach their personal and professional goals. ILC will provide support for Educate and Elevate, along with additional member training. The ILC will also issue a credential endorsed by the Iowa Department of Education to members who complete the I2O volunteer training.

Organizations that are approved to serve as AmeriCorps host sites must be committed to a cash match that will be used to help offset the costs in paying the member’s living allowance. All payroll is handled by the Iowa Department of Education along with the members’ background checks. Host sites are expected to recruit their own members, but the Department will assist with recruitment by preparing the position descriptions, posting the positions on an AmeriCorps site, and working with the host site’s staff in related activities.

Benefits of Hosting an AmeriCorps Member

  • AmeriCorps members will build capacity for your programs by leveraging volunteer support.
  • AmeriCorps members will assist individuals and communities in rising out of poverty by helping adult learners improve their literacy skills.
  • Host sites assist AmeriCorps members in gaining meaningful hands-on experience in a professional setting.

Member Eligibility

To be eligible for this AmeriCorps program, members must be 18 years of age or older at the commencement of service, a U.S. citizen, have a high school diploma or its equivalent, and pass a three-part criminal background check.

Benefits of Becoming an AmeriCorps Member

  • Members gain hands-on experience in a professional setting working with community college adult education programs and community organizations serving adult learners.
  • A living allowance is provided to all members. The amount of this payment is related to the level of service a member performs.
  • All members can have employment outside of the time commitment to their service term.
  • After successfully completing a term of service, members are eligible to receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. This award can be used to repay qualified student loans or to pay education costs at qualified institutions of higher learning. The education award may be used up to seven years after the term of service has ended.
  • Members who are at least 55 years of age at the beginning of their term of service may choose to transfer their education award to a child, grandchild, or foster child.
