Thirteen video segments help to explain the principles and components of the Iowa Professional Development Model and examples of applying the components in Iowa school districts. Clicking the following five menu items pops you down to the lists of video links and transcript links.

Video Segment 1A - Model Overview (10 minutes)
     In this part of Bev Showers' overview of the Iowa Professional Development Model, she introduces four underlying principles.

Video Segment 1B - Model Overview continued (13 minutes)
     In this part of Bev Showers' overview of the Model, she introduces the planning components: data collection/analysis, goal setting, selecting content, and designing the process for staff development.

Video Segment 1C - Model Overview continued (10 minutes)
     In this part of Bev Showers' overview of the Model, she introduces the ongoing cycle, of providing training/learning opportunities for staff development.

Video Segment 2 - Focus on Instruction (3 minutes)
     This presentation is by a Des Moines Public Schools spokesperson, which was among the first districts in Iowa to apply the Model.

Video Segment 3 - Participative Decision Making (3 minutes)
     Gary Ratigan, Principal of Ankeny High School (now retired) represents one of the Iowa case study districts that began applying the Model in 2004.

Segment 3A - Collaboration (2 3/4 minutes)
     Donna Christensen, Principal of Harding Middle School in Des Moines, represents one of the Iowa case study districts that began applying the Model in 2004.

Segment 4 - Simultaneity (2 minutes)
      Bev Showers defines simultaneity, one of the four principles underlying the Model.

Segment 5 - Leadership (10 1/2 minutes)
      Bev Showers is interviewed about the purpose and role of distributed leadership.

Segment 5A - Participative Decision Making (3 minutes)
    Mike Ashton is Superintendent of Iowa's BCLUW and GMG Districts.

Segment 6 - Collecting and Analyzing Data (6 minutes)
     At the beginning of the segment, Bev Showers is briefly interviewed about the purpose of collecting and analyzing student data. The segment continues with a school district representative describing teachers' analysis of student data.

Segment 7 - Goal Setting (6 3/4 minutes)
      The speaker is Jenny Johnson, Director of Curriculum and Assessment for Ankeny School District. She describes how groups in her district used the results of data analysis to set goals.

Segment 8 - Designing Process for Professional Development (3 1/2 minutes)
     Bev Showers describes the elements of effective staff development.

Segment 9 - Selecting Content (9 1/2 minutes)
      Deb Hansen describes the Iowa Content Network. Bev Showers explains the characteristics and implications of scientifically based research upon selecting content.

Segment 10 - Ongoing Cycle (12 minutes)
     Bev Showers and Deb Hansen introduce the Ongoing Cycle component of the Iowa Professional Development Model. Then brief segments of two collaborative team meetings illustrate how teachers discuss data and plan lessons. Both teams are from Harding Middle School of Des Moines Community School District. The segment concludes with additional comments by Dr. Showers.

Segment 11 - Summative Evaluation  (3 1/2 minutes)
     Bev Showers describes the Des Moines Public Schools' summative evaluation of middle and high school level struggling readers after implementing reading comprehension strategies.
