Must a student who violates a school's policy on alcohol or controlled substances be expelled or suspended?
No.
The board "may" suspend or expel a student for a violation of policies on the use of tobacco or the use or possession of alcohol or controlled substances. Suspension or expulsion for these violations is at the board's discretion. Iowa Code section 279.9.
