Who can become approved to teach the driving only part of driver's education and how does a person get that approval?
When the Board of Educational Examiners first wrote this into the rules, they required an elementary or secondary teaching certificate. A year later, the Iowa legislature passed a law that specified that a teaching license is NOT required. A Behind-the-Wheel (only) Driving Instructor course is approved by the Department of Transportation. At a minimum, the course is to include at last 12 clock hours of observed behind-the-wheel instruction and 24 hours of classroom instruction. This course is offered by the University of Northern Iowa (1-800-648-3864).
