The standards do not regulate foods and beverages provided as part of the reimbursable national school lunch (including breakfast) program, sold at concession stands, or sold at fundraisers that are not targeted to students. In addition, foods and beverages provided by parents or teachers (such as for class parties), brought to school from home or elsewhere by a student for the student to consume, and provided for staff in staff lounges are not regulated. However, meals sold to students through the national school lunch program are governed by USDA Federal Regulations. Additionally, reimbursable meals must meet specific USDA requirements based on the menu planning method (either food-based or nutrient standard) that is used.
