This training event offers Iowa professionals working to provide a safe, healthy and caring environment for all of Iowa's children and youth with opportunities to expand knowledge and develop expertise in creating supportive environments in which students thrive.
Strands
Strand 1 - Mental Health Wraparound - School and district teams will develop their skills in designing supports for students needing more intense services to be successful in school, home and community.
Presenter: Diane McDonald
Audience: Invited district and school teams only.
Strand 2: Safe and Supportive Schools (April 6 only) - Details will be provided about administration of student, parent and staff surveys and a timeline of future grant activities will be presented.
Facilitators: Cyndy Erickson and Dr. Barbara Ohlund
Audience: Administrators from high schools participating in the Safe and Supportive Schools grant.
Strand 3: PBIS Training of Trainers - Participants will gain Tier 2/3 skills for training and coaching schools.
Presenter: Dr. Lucille Eber
Audience: PBIS trainers/coaches who attended the “Building Tier2/3 Trainer Competencies” in January, 2011
Strand 4: Mental Health Supports - Participants will learn about the characteristics of two mental health diagnoses and strategies to address student needs. Two diagnosis areas will be presented each day.

Strand 5: Bullying Prevention/Intervention
- April 5 - Participants will learn about strategies to use with bystanders and new research on targets of bullying.

Audience: All Educators interested in best practices for bullying prevention/intervention.

Strand 6: Engaging Parents - Participants will have extended workshop time with both keynote speakers to develop strategies for improving partnerships with parents.
Presenters: Dr. Karen Mapp (April 5) and Dr. Carl Bell (April 6)
Audience: Parents, school counselors, administrators
Strand 7: Challenging Behavior - Participants will learn how FBA’s and BIP’s are evaluated in schools without disrupting existing classroom practices. Participants will present the work of the CBS project to each other in a “learn by teaching” model with critical feedback provided
