Healthy Classrooms, Healthy Students

Iowa Department of Education’s Team Nutrition Program and Iowa Action for Healthy Kids are partnering to hold a webinar for elementary teachers that will highlight resources that can assist in creating a culture of wellness in classrooms. 

Pick a better snackLessons:
Learn about Iowa Department of Public Health’s Pick a better snackcampaign that includes lessons, bingo cards, parent newsletters, and recipes. New lessons have been developed for classroom teachers. They are in alignment with the Iowa Core Curriculum and have been vetted past a group of elementary school teachers. The lessons promote healthy eating and daily physical activity while addressing important academic concepts.
 
In-Class Physical Activity Breaks:
There are opportunities to integrate fitness into daily classroom routines.  Learn about Stories in Motion, classroom physical activity breaks and Move for Thought, physical activities that can be integrated with the content of any subject area.
 
Live Healthy Iowa Kids:
Live Healthy Iowa Kid's is a free 10 week wellness challenge for youth in grades K-12. This challenge inspires youth to be more active and make better food and beverage choices and will run from January 28 - April 5, 2013. Learn how to register, best practices from schools that have participated in the past, and mini-grant opportunities.
 
The training will be delivered in a webinar format, that can be viewed from a computer connected to the Internet. Watch your email, as the date gets closer, you will receive a link to view the webinar and download any necessary plug-ins.
