This course integrates face-to-face and online participation that uses teacher inquiry and reflective learning to engage participants in learning mathematics and experiencing various instructional approaches to teaching mathematics. The course will be organized around five central topics in mathematics: number and operations, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and algebra. Through activities provided, the participants will be challenged to extend their idea of what it means to do mathematics. They will become part of a learning community expanding their understanding through solving open-ended problems, working together, sharing ideas, and discovering multiple ways for solving problems. The focus throughout will be incorporating the NCTM Process Standards, the Essential Characteristics of the Iowa Core Curriculum, and the Standards for Mathematical Process from the Common Core State Standards. Frequent logging in to the online portion of the course to check on posts and replies is required.
