Every Child Reads (ECR) K-12 is designed to develop and refine a professional development strategy for large-scale, building-based structured school improvement focused on accelerating the reading achievement of students in kindergarten through 12th grade, with a special emphasis on students who are experiencing difficulty and to develop the capacity of the educational system to support structured school improvement effort in reading. There are two major goals that are pursued simultaneously: (1) to build a learning community engaged in studying literacy and promoting growth in literacy, and (2) to improve student achievement in literacy. ECR’s professional development sequence, designed to guide school staffs to collectively engage in quality professional development, provides schools guidance in the use of Iowa’s professional development model as the vehicle for the study of literacy and literacy acquisition and the selection of instructional models and strategies appropriate to the needs of students. Accelerating student achievement is complex and challenging work for schools. Research has clearly demonstrated that to improve student achievement schools must improve instruction. This requires quality professional development. ECR is designed to provide research-based content and the facilitation needed for improving instruction in order to accelerate the achievement of all students.
