Iowa seeks short-term relief from No Child Left Behind targets

Because Iowa's state application for a waiver from certain provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act was turned down, the Iowa Department of Education today requested a one-year freeze of the state target increases that schools are held to under the federal education law.

 

Federal government turns down Iowa's No Child Left Behind waiver request

Because of recent Iowa legislation, the U.S. Department of Education cannot approve Iowa’s state application for a waiver from key provisions of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass said.

The central stumbling block is a new statutory requirement, passed by the Iowa Legislature this past session, that any changes to the system of educator evaluation must be approved by the Legislature.

Seven Iowa schools are among 304 schools nationwide named 2011 National Blue Ribbon Schools for their overall academic excellence or for their success in closing achievement gaps:

  • Anita Elementary School
  • Decorah High School
  • Greene Elementary School
  • St. Columbkille Elementary School in Dubuque
  • Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic School in Davenport
  • MOC-Floyd Valley High School in Orange City
  • Washington Elementary School in Muscatine
