Iowa Forum on Competency-Based Education

The Iowa Department of Education has launched the Iowa Forum on Competency-Based Education. The purpose of the site is to continue the discussion about and further the work on competency-based education across Iowa. Features include:

  • Videos and materials from the Research to Action Forum held in December are posted under the Event Archive tab.
  • Forum discussions encourage connections between educators interested in competency-based education.
  • Groups can be created by districts and schools, by job position or by topic. Members are encouraged to form groups to further discussion.
 

Director Glass names members of new Instructional Time Task Force

Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass today announced the 16 Iowans who will serve on the Instructional Time Task Force, which was established in Senate File 2284 to study issues such as the school start date, length of the school day and school year, and after-school programming.

 

Iowa receives short-term relief from No Child Left Behind targets

Iowa has received U.S. Department of Education approval for a one-year freeze of the target increases that schools are held to under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass said today.

“I’m grateful to the U.S. Department of Education for its prompt approval of this request, which will temporarily help schools while the Iowa Department of Education continues to seek permanent relief from the unrealistic accountability measures of No Child Left Behind,” Glass said. “For one year, this measure will halt the ratcheting up of unrealistic targets and protect some schools from being impacted by the blame-and-shame sanctions of No Child Left Behind.”

 

State conference sparks ideas, discussion about competency-based education

An education system that advances students based on their mastery of content rather than age or seat time seems intuitive. Transitioning to a system of competency-based education from a traditional one, however, takes a lot of planning.

More than 300 Iowa education stakeholders took a big first step in the process Dec. 8 at a state conference in Des Moines.

Notice for public comment regarding No Child Left Behind waiver

In October, the Iowa Department of Education notified the U.S. Department of Education of its intent to seek a waiver from requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. The Department will request a waiver in mid-February to move beyond the accountability measures of No Child Left Behind and to continue to advance reform efforts in Iowa.
