Iowa Department of Education consultant receives prestigious honor

The Iowa Department of Education's Jan Kuhl is believed to be the first-ever Iowan to receive a national honor by the American School counselor Association (ASCA).

Jan, the school counseling and careers consultant for the department, has been named the National 2012 Director/Coordinator of the Year by ASCA. She was nominated by people she works with in the field.

 

Advisory: Director Glass announces Competency-Based Instruction Task Force

Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass today announced the 35 Iowans who will serve on the Competency-Based Instruction Task Force, which was established in Senate File 2284 to study competency-based instruction standards and the integration of competency-based instruction with the Iowa Core, as well as to develop assessment models and professional development for educators.

Iowa Department of Education Director Jason Glass today announced a meeting of the Task Force on Teacher Leadership and Compensation on Friday, July 27, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The meeting will take place in Room B100 (basement level) of the Grimes State Office Building.

Iowa teenagers hear a lot from adults about what they need to succeed in school and beyond. Fifteen high school students turned the tables March 28 at the Iowa Department of Education in Des Moines. Wednesday marked the first meeting of the Learning Council, a new statewide student advisory group.

The students came from high school classes that range in size from 48 students to 400. Their hometowns span the Iowa map, from Shenandoah to Dubuque.

The Iowa Department of Education will request a waiver for the approval of an amendment to Iowa’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 School Improvement Grants Application to extend the waiver previously granted under section 421(b) of the General Education Provisions Act (GEPA), 20 U.S.C. § 1225(b), to extend the period of availability of the fiscal year (FY) 2009 School Improvement Grant (SIG) funds awarded under Section 1003(g) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended, until September 30, 2014.
