Iowa's Top Teachers Honored

Some of the state's top teachers were honored at the annual Iowa's Teachers of the Year Luncheon on Friday, October 22, 2010. The event recognized Iowa’s finalists and winners of the following education awards:

  • Iowa Teacher of the Year
  • Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching
  • Preserve America History Teacher of the Year
 

Iowa to Receive Federal Funds for Safe Schools

12 School Districts included in Safe and Supportive School Grant

Governor Chet Culver announced that Iowa will receive nearly $3.5 million in federal funds this year, and stands to receive nearly $14 million over the next four years, to support efforts that will help ensure all Iowa students attend and learn in a safe school.

 

Iowa Second in the Nation for the Highest Average ACT Composite Score

Iowa students continue to earn the second highest average ACT scores in the nation during 2010, according to results released by ACT. This year also saw an increase in the number of students in Iowa who took the test compared to 2009.

The average ACT composite score for Iowa students this year was 22.2, compared to the national average score of 21. Iowa’s average score is the second highest in the nation among states testing a majority of their graduating seniors. While Iowa’s average score is slightly lower than last year’s state-wide composite score of 22.4, the national average is also slightly lower than last year’s average of 21.1. Minnesota is first in the nation with an average score of 22.9 out of a possible 36.

The Iowa Department of Education will request a waiver for the approval of an amendment to Iowa’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 School Improvement Grants Application to extend the waiver previously granted under section 421(b) of the General Education Provisions Act (GEPA), 20 U.S.C. § 1225(b), to extend the period of availability of the fiscal year (FY) 2009 School Improvement Grant (SIG) funds awarded under Section 1003(g) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended, until September 30, 2014.
