Iowa Joins 49 States in Common Core Standards Initiative

Iowa has joined the Common Core State Standards Initiative, a state-led process to develop common English-language arts and mathematics standards. The Common Core State Standards Initiative will be jointly led by the NGA Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).

 

2010 Annual Condition of Education Report Released

The 2010 edition of The Annual Condition of Education Report has been released by the Iowa Department of Education. Since Iowa released its first Condition of Education report more than 20 years ago access to quality preschool has significantly increased, the percentage of minority students has tripled, and while student enrollment has steadily decreased an increase is projected over the next five years.

 

14 School Districts Honored with Breaking Barriers to Learning and Teaching Award

Fourteen school districts from across Iowa were honored by the State Board of Education for making major progress in closing gaps in student achievement. The Breaking Barriers to Learning and Teaching Award was created by the State Board and is presented each year to recognize successful efforts to eliminate achievement gaps by improving instruction, curriculum and programs for students, and professional development opportunities for school staff.

 

Jeffrey Hosts Webinar on 'Iowa's Path to 21st Century Learning'

On June 3, 2009, Iowa Department of Education Director Judy Jeffrey hosted a webinar focused on "Iowa's Path to 21st Century Learning" for the Cyber Summit on 21st Century Skills.

 

Governor Announces Statewide Preschool Grants

Visiting a preschool class at the Walnut Street School, Governor Chet Culver today announced the names of 53 school districts in Iowa receiving state funds under the statewide voluntary preschool program for 4-year-old children. This announcement will provide an estimated 3,247 additional children in the state a quality preschool experience during the upcoming school year.

The Iowa Department of Education has prepared an amended High Cost Pool Plan for implementation in the 2013-2014 school year. This plan describes how funding set aside under the provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Part B may be accessed by local education agencies (LEA).
