Iowa Students Top National Average on NAEP Science Tests

Iowa students in the fourth and eighth grades outperformed their peers on the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) science test, according to a new report released by the U.S. Department of Education. Iowa was one of forty-seven states or jurisdictions which participated in the NAEP science tests, given to students in 2009.

 

Iowa Joins 49 States in Common Core Standards Initiative

Iowa has joined the Common Core State Standards Initiative, a state-led process to develop common English-language arts and mathematics standards. The Common Core State Standards Initiative will be jointly led by the NGA Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO).

 

Iowa Teachers Earn National Board Certification

Nineteen Iowa teachers joined the ranks of educators throughout the nation who earned National Board Certification in 2010, according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).

Governor Announces Statewide Preschool Grants

Visiting a preschool class at the Walnut Street School, Governor Chet Culver today announced the names of 53 school districts in Iowa receiving state funds under the statewide voluntary preschool program for 4-year-old children. This announcement will provide an estimated 3,247 additional children in the state a quality preschool experience during the upcoming school year.

The Iowa Department of Education will request a waiver for the approval of an amendment to Iowa’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2009 School Improvement Grants Application to extend the waiver previously granted under section 421(b) of the General Education Provisions Act (GEPA), 20 U.S.C. § 1225(b), to extend the period of availability of the fiscal year (FY) 2009 School Improvement Grant (SIG) funds awarded under Section 1003(g) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), as amended, until September 30, 2014.
