Iowa Honored for Work on 21st Century Skills

Today Iowa received the 21st Century Skills Practice of the Year Award, which is sponsored by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills and commemorates the country's preeminent state-led education reform initiatives. Specifically, the award recognizes states that are incorporating knowledge and 21st century skills into classrooms.

 

Iowa's High School Graduation Rate Increases

The graduation rate for Iowa’s Class of 2010 increased over the previous year, according to figures released by the Iowa Department of Education. In fact, all but one student subgroup saw an increase in its graduation rate, with significant increases among both English-Language Learner and Hispanic students.

 

More Iowa Seniors Participate, Succeed in Advanced Placement Courses

The number of Iowa high school seniors who participate and succeed in Advanced Placement courses continues to grow, according to the 7th Annual AP Report to the Nation released by the College Board. A total of 5,135 members of Iowa's Class of 2010 took at least one AP exam while in high school, a 9.5% increase over the previous year and more than doubled the number ten years ago.

 

First Allocation of Iowa Stabilization Funds Approved

Governor Chet Culver announced today the U.S. Department of Education has approved Iowa's application for the first $316 million in State Fiscal Stabilization Funds available for public education through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
 

Iowa Students Top National Average on NAEP Science Tests

Iowa students in the fourth and eighth grades outperformed their peers on the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) science test, according to a new report released by the U.S. Department of Education. Iowa was one of forty-seven states or jurisdictions which participated in the NAEP science tests, given to students in 2009.
